intentional events for friendship and connection

Skip the small talk! Make new friends in Birmingham, with Slow Social

Slow Socials are a sober/alcohol free, facilitated gatherings designed to help you make meaningful connections in a way that feels intentional, supported, and accessible. Think speed dating, but slower, and focused on friendship, community, and connection.

Instead of navigating a room full of strangers, we move through a series of structured conversations based on prompts. Some questions are all about reflection, others are light-hearted, but they're all designed to skip the small talk!

The format is as a bit like speed dating, but for friendship, community and genuine human connection. Some events focus just on making connections and others include activities, workshops or other lovely things to explore alongside our chats.

Slow Social events are intergenerational, identify affirming spaces that are built on kindness, respect, and inclusion. Everyone is welcome, discrimination or harassment of any kind isn't tolerated and we respect each other’s identities, boundaries, and privacy. This a space where we want everyone to feel valued, safe and able to be themselves.

Slow Social events are hosted by me, Laura! I’m a counsellor and therapist and my work brings together psychotherapy, embodied practices, meaningful connection, and nature-based experiences. You can explore my FAQs to find out a bit more about my work and my values.

Slow Social is such a thoughtfully crafted, inclusive and fun event that I couldn’t recommend enough to anyone wanting new ways to meet people and make genuine connections.

  • Siobhan says:

We've not long had the August Slow Social, a picnic at Highbury Park, Kings Heath, a park I've lived close to for 23 years without connecting with like I did last Monday eve. The Slow Social is a perfect way to reconnect with self, other and nature all around us. Without feeling daunting or overly prepared, and in the capable hands of Laura guiding us through the elements of the encounter in the lazy early evening sun, I was able to enjoy meeting new people and having different conversations, plus great food brought and shared. I went with someone I knew this time, but that was because I needed her to guide my wheelchair. There was an interesting mix of ages of folk, as well as other aspects of diversity, all welcome. Laura works hard to keep the space open and supportive whilst being clear about the limits of tolerance in terms of behaviour and values. Within the space I have been able to muse on topics like whether or not I've had a religious experience, what is my favourite work of art, how connected am I to my ancestors. I highly recommend you to try this 'new' way of being social.

  • Rob says:

I went to the very first Slow Social and came away really glad I’d gone. Laura created a warm, welcoming space where it felt easy to have genuine conversations with people you’d only just met. The evening was thoughtfully structured with a mix of one-to-one and small-group discussions, and the prompts encouraged meaningful conversations without ever feeling awkward or forced. Everyone I met was friendly and open, and it was a refreshing change from the usual networking or social events. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking to slow down, connect with others on a deeper level, and spend an evening in good company. I’m already looking forward to the next one.
